Description

The masks of the Venice Carnival fascinate me. You see them in lots of the shops in Venice and I am immediately drawn towards them. I was looking for a new subject, something with strong colours and motifs, and these fitted the bill perfectly.

Ink painting is a form of torture as far as I am concerned. One mistake and it’s ruined, tear it up and start again!!! But for some bizarre reason I love it. I never relax when I’m doing them. The entire painting process is incredibly intense and I always breathe a sigh of relief when it’s done. But the effects of this unforgiving medium are beautiful.
