Venice Carnival Mask 4, 2021

Ink on watercolour paper

Ink painting is a form of torture as far as I am concerned. One mistake and it’s ruined, tear it up and start again!!! But for some bizarre reason, I love it. I never relax when I’m doing them. The entire painting process is incredibly intense and I always breathe a sigh of relief when it’s done. But the effects of this unforgiving medium are beautiful.

The masks of the Venice Carnival fascinate me. You see them in lots of the shops in Venice and I am immediately drawn towards them. I was looking for a new subject – something with strong colours and motifs – and these fitted the bill perfectly.
